Imagine owning a restaurant which managed to get to the number one spot in the whole world, according to Britain’s Restaurant Magazine.
The competition is incredible every year as the poll is carried out, and voters take into consideration not only the high quality cuisine served, but also the overall experience of dining in a particular restaurant.
How Is the List Compiled?
Each year, Restaurant Magazine compiles a list of 50 restaurants which have been voted the best in the world. In order to create this list, a chairperson from every region of the world has the opportunity to cast votes.
Rather than having nominated restaurants to vote for, the chairpersons from each region are asked to give a list of their seven favourite restaurants. They have to have eaten in the restaurants in the last 18 months.
In order to discourage each chairperson from voting for restaurants in their regions, each one is allowed to list up to three from their own region but the remaining nominations must be from different locations.
To encourage fairness, a person cannot list a restaurant which they own or have an economic or financial interest in.
Which Restaurants Have Won in the Past?
Noma, Copenhagen, is the current bearer of the title, and has managed to bag the top spot for a total of four years now.
This restaurant won for three consecutive years from 2010 to 2012, and was interrupted in 2013 by El Celler de Can Roca, a fine dining restaurant in Girona, Spain.
Another restaurant which managed to get itself a name for constantly winning the title is elBulli in Roses, Catalonia.
elBulli won the top spot for the first time in 2002, and then won every year from 2006 to 2009, making it the restaurant to win the award the most.
The only British restaurant to make it to number 1 is The Fat Duck in Berkshire, England. This restaurant was lucky enough to win in 2005, just after The French Laundry in California had won for the previous two consecutive years.
Which Restaurant Could Win in 2015?
According to PaddyPower, Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck doesn’t stand a chance of winning the title this year, but it’s no wonder, since the restaurant has closed for refurbishment and won’t be opening until the end of the year.
Noma, on the other hand, has a very good chance of taking the award for the fifth time, and since it’s already the current winner, it could definitely be set to have another three-year lucky streak. With odds of 4/5, it is ahead of El Celler de Can Roca, the Spanish restaurant which could very easily disrupt Noma’s success once again.
Heston Blumenthal isn’t completely out of the picture, however, since PaddyPower has given odds of 10/1 for his London restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which came fifth last year.
Although The French Laundry enjoyed success early on, it’s not likely to win this year, according to PaddyPower, with odds of 50/1.
When will the winner be announced?
The best restaurant in the world will be announced on June 1st, 2015.
