The Bundesliga curtain-raiser sees league champions Bayern Munich resuming hostilities against cup-winners Borussia Dortmund.
Fancy a bet on the DFL Supercup? We’ll run through Bet365’s odds for “Der Klassiker” at the Signal Iduna Park on the 5th August.
Bayern Munich (17/20)
Who could blame you for backing Bayern Munich against domestic opponents? Since 2013 Lewandowski, Thiago, Boateng and co have had a stranglehold on the Bundesliga.
In that time they’ve had two changes of manager but have never looked more comfortable at the top, opening up a 15-point winning margin last season.
Reasons for Doubt?
First up this is a one-off match. And in that scenario in the DFB Cup back in April Dortmund snatched the win. The other is that last season’s Bayern and the one that will take the field at the Signal Iduna Park in early August will be very different.
Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm have retired, while Tolisso, Gnabry and Niklas Süle have all come in. More are sure to follow before the match.
By then Bayern could be stronger or weaker than in previous season. Nobody really knows until they line up against Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund (14/5)
You may be persuaded to back Dortmund for your German Super Cup bet, if only because they’re the same side that defeated Bayern in a final a few months ago.
The big difference is off the field where Thomas Tuchel has been replaced by Peter Bosz, who just steered Ajax to a Europa League final against Man United.
With a young squad peppered with up-and-coming stars like Weigl, Dembélé and Pulisic, Dortmund can hope to be stronger in 2017. And provided nobody important leaves before the big game they’ll have the advantage of stability.
Before you bet on the German Super Cup you want to run your eye over the results in the last few seasons. On that front the two sides are evenly matched.
Bayern took the trophy in 2016 and lost to Wolfsburg on penalties in 2015. In 2014 Dortmund overcame Bayern 2-0. Odds on the DFL Supercup ending in a Draw are 14/5.
With a longer view, Dortmund have the upper-hand, having taken four of the six Supercup matches between these old rivals.
